Virgo myth
- Virgo mythology -
The Virgo myth is about the Great Goddess, the Magna Mater and how Virgo can be seen as a not virginal but rather as intact and self contained.
Virgo, the only female figure in the zodiac, can be linked with most of the main female deities: Demeter, Aphrodite, Erigone, Astraea, Isis, Ceres and even the Virgin Mary.
In trying to understand the Virgo personality, I will however focus on Virgo who is symbolized as the Great Goddess, the Magna Mater.
Read a short version of the Virgo mythology below.
Virgo myth
Let me start by saying that to refer to a Virgo as virginal or innocent is laughable. The word Virgo relates to new growth, to be within certain boundaries, production, a heroic maiden, bearing fruit and the beginning of spring and the harvest.
The Great Goddess is as old as time itself and many versions of this myth can be found in the records. She can be seen as the mother and therefore creator of all.
The Great Goddess was not virginal at all, but rather without male influence and domination. She is depicted as ruling alone, husbandless, and offering her femininity freely as she chose. She is the consort of all life. She is her own person, integrated within herself without needing another to complete her.
She is portrayed in many statues as having multiple breasts (symbolizing nurturing) or giving birth (life giving abilities through her fertility). She is complete within herself and can give freely from herself without having the need to be seeded from outside.
The symbolism and meaning of the Virgo myth:
Virgo is the last sign of the first half of the Zodiac that has to do with individual development. Virgo has already learned the lessons of the first half and you catch a hint of this when seeing the “been there, done that” attitude displayed by some Virgo’s.
In preparation for the next six cycles in the zodiac Virgo need to combine the individual lessons learned and package it into a intact, well-functioning whole. Can you see why Virgo is referred to as intact and a self-contained vessel?
This is also the reason for Virgo’s dabbling with matters of health, psychology and self-help. This is an unconscious effort to make sense of the lessons learned and to integrate that knowledge into a personality that can deal with any experience.
It is interesting to note that a lot of Virgos need to live alone or isolate themselves for a time. They have an instinctual understanding that you must first master yourself and find peace in your own company before you can let another person be himself.
The compulsive self-perfecting is a deep need to prepare for the sensed next phase on the zodiac wheel of life. Virgo is not really trying to order and understand the outside world, but rather life itself. Life is, after all, the self within.
