Taurus myth

- Mythology of Taurus the bull -

The Taurus myth is the story of how Theseus braved a labyrinth to fight and kill the Minotaur, a creature that is half man and half beast.

Although there are many legends and myths connected to Taurus the bull, I find the story of Theseus and the minotaur the most relevant to the personality and challenges of the deeper Taurus personality.

Read a short version of the mythology of Taurus the bull below.

The Taurus myth

Lets start with a bit of background first: Minos, the king of Crete, had a herd of very special bulls that he dedicated to the god Poseidon. He promised to sacrifice a beautiful white bull to Poseidon, but his greed interfered and he replaced it with a lesser bull.

In revenge Poseidon asked Venus to help him retaliate. Venus inflicts Minos’ wife, Pasiphae with an uncontrollable lust for the white bull. Pasiphae mates with the bull and produces the Minotaur, a creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull that feeds on human flesh.

The Minotaur is enclosed in a complicated labyrinth and offerings of young men and fair maidens are made to feed the endless appetite of the beast. This is where our hero, Theseus enters the story.

Theseus, who is the son of the Kings of Athens, volunteers to be offered to the Minotaur in the hope of killing the beast. With the help of Minos’ daughter, Ariadne and the famous ball of threat, he enters the labyrinth and kills the Minotaur and find his way out by following the threat.

As reward, he marries Ariadne and is made the King of Crete and adopts the hereditary title of Minos.

The symbolism and meaning of the Taurus myth:

Remember Minos’s greed in the beginning of the story?

Desire and greed is a dominant trait in Taurus. It can be a desire for power, money, status, food, drink or even sexual satisfaction. When Taurus wants something, it can develop into a full blown obsession, a force of nature that must be answered.

The difficulty in this is whether the want is controlled and steered by a man or driven by a primitive beast without considering the consequences. Need I remind you of the proverbial bull in a China shop?

Taurus needs that ball of threat to keep him on the right path.

Taurus can easily lose his way in the labyrinth of human relationships (and his inner life) since the bull who prefers simplicity, often misread and misjudge the nuances of relationships.

However, if he has a clear task set before him, and is supplied with the magical ball of threat to show him the way, your Taurus will be the hero you can depend on.

Take note that Taurus has a deep need to be useful, to have a set task, to be valued and to produce something that will last and be a testimony to his abilities and existence.
