Your online dating rules

Before you sign up for your first online dating experience, consider what (who) you are looking for and how you are going to accomplish that.

The more you can narrow down your preferences, the easier it will be to target the specific type of person or dating service you should go for.

Don’t just go along for the ride. Finding a partner is life changing and should not be approached lightly. Get a plan and stick to it!

Step 1: Be clear about you

As you start your online dating experience take a moment to reflect on who you are and what you have to offer. Work you way through the best of you list again and become clear about your best traits. Take your positives and embrace them. Fall in love with yourself.

When you feel good about yourself, you will start to see yourself in a different light and your behavior-patterns will change accordingly. You will become more attractive. Always remember that you are valuable and you are so unique that there is only one of you.

Step 2: Be clear about the partner you want

Take another look at your partner-wish-list to remind yourself of the qualities you want and need in a partner. As you work your way through the profiles available on the dating sites keep on referring back to your partner list. You know what you want – is the person behind the profile you are looking at, a match for the partner you want?

Keep in mind that nobody is perfect and that you will have to compromise on some things. Search for someone that will match at least 80% of your partner wish-list.

Step 3: Decide on your must-haves

Before you add your profile to an online dating site, visit a few sites and do a search of people in your age-group to see who is available. You will very quickly realize that there are a wide variety of people taking part in online dating. You will be lost without a clear plan and a list of must-haves in hand.Make a list of the aspects of your potential partner that you see as non-negotiable and must-have. Look at factors such as age range, race, religion, height, weight, children or not, or whatever else you see as important to you.

Look over your list and make sure that you are not unrealistic or unreasonable in your expectations. The most warm, romantic, caring, balanced partner might not come in a package that your expect – be open for this. If you have a history of attracting the wrong people into your life, focus now on changing your ways and making better, healthier choices.

Stick to your list and use it as a guide to eliminate those that will not be a good match for you. Focus your energy on people that will make positive, quality contributions to your life.

Step 4: Decide on you what you don't want

You also need to be clear about the things that you just won't take from a partner. Think about abuse, bad language, lying, infidelity, cruelty or even some forms of addictions.

Be very clear in you mind before you start dating about where you would draw the line regarding bad and rude behavior and stick to your guns. Be prepared to be very firm and even to walk away when necessary.
