Mythology of Aries
The mythology of Aries is about the story of Jason and the capturing of the golden fleece – the ultimate goal of Aries.
The Aries mythology is part of Greek mythology regarding the golden fleece of a magic ram that hung in a sacred grove of trees in the land of Colchis that was guarded by a dragon that never slept.
It contains all the delicious details any good story should have: an impossible quest, danger, adventure, friendship, fire-breathing dragons and of course, love. Read the story below.
The Mythology of Aries
The Aries myth starts when our hero Jason turns twenty and visits Pelias (who cheated Jason out of his rightfull kingship) to demand his throne back. Pelias (trying to get rid of Jason) set him the impossible task of retrieving the legendary golden fleece before he will restore the throne to Jason.
Jason accepts the challenge and gathers 50 hero’s to accompany him on his quest. On the ship Argo, Jason and his team of brave hero’s, the Argonauts, face and conquer countless dangers to finally arrive in Colchis, where the fleece is hidden.
The King Aietes of Colchis, not wanting to hand over the fleece, set Jason a series of dangerous challenges in the hope of getting him killed. First he must yoke fire breathing bulls, then sow a field with dragon’s teeth and then fight and defeat the warriors that will rise from the furrows.
The King’s daughter Medea, falling head over heels in love with Jason, helps him to accomplish his tasks by using her magic. Jason and Medea returns the golden fleece to Greece and reclaims his throne, only to be driven out by the locals who fears Medea’s magic.
They flee to Corinth where the Corinth king offers Jason his daughters’ hand in marriage and Jason accepts. Medea who is deeply hurt and furious, retaliates and kills the kings’ daughter, as well as her children she has with Jason and escapes to Mount Olympus.
Jason returns to his kingdom but is killed when he is sitting weeping next to his ship Argo, and a beam falls off and hits him on the head.
The symbolism and meaning of the mythology of Aries:
The golden fleece can be seen as the symbol of the ultimate goal of Aries, whether it is the achievement of a goal, a romantic conquest, the takeover of a company or the realization of his personality. With Aries, there is always a goal.
Jason as a typical Arian, loves and needs a challenge (especially when it seems impossible) and gathers his band of merry men (he is a great motivator) around him and rushes headlong into his quest. Danger and adventure fuels his fire.
Jason’s succeeds in retrieving the fleece but fails miserably in his treatment of women. In typical Arian fashion he becomes arrogant, forgets the help and support he received along the way, becomes bored and moves on to a new conquest or new romance.
This is a classical problem for all rams; they love a new adventure and sweep all those around them along with enthusiastic energy, but quickly become bored, drops everything and moves on to something new, leaving a string of unfinished projects and frustrated people behind them.
Aries needs to learn the importance of the feminine, consideration of others, patience, gentleness, compromise, the value of finishing what he started and adjusting to circumstance.
Aries is a sign of initiation and change and needs a goal, to initiate change and to conquer. However insensitive, rash and self centered, Aries makes it possible for life to change, grow and progress. This is truly a knight in shining amour charging along at full speed – so give him some slack if he is a bit clumsy and rash.
