Libra mythology
- The Libra constellation mythology -
From the Libra mythology we learn about the blind prophet, Tiresias and why Librans tend to sympathize with both sides of an argument.
The story of Tiresias involves may twists and turns, but in understanding the Libra personality, I will only focus on Tiresias being turned into a female for seven years and what his blindness symbolized.
Read a short version of the Libra myth below.
Libra mythology
Tiresias’s story is part of Greek mythology and tells about him being turned into a female for seven years.
Hera, the wife of Zeus turned Tiresias into a female in a fit of anger. Tiresias then becames a priestess of Hera and was renowned for her/his abilities as a prostitute and even had children.
After returning to his male form, Zeus and Hera asked him who experienced the most pleasure, male or female? After trying to evade answering and causing conflict, he reluctantly said: "Of ten parts a man enjoys one only."
For his impudence he was blinded. It is interesting to note that blindness according to Greek mythology refers to the ability to see inwards. He now has inner sight or plainly put: insight.
The symbolism and meaning of Libra mythology:
Libra, as an air sign, is all about logic and the qualities of the mind. It’s not as if Libra doesn’t crave emotional connections or are unable to connect on an emotional level, it is just that Libra tend to focus on how he thinks things should be.
The line between logic and reality can be a bit vague for Librans who might find reality somewhat imperfect and unpleasant and not being on par with his expectations.
Librans tend to fall in love with the feelling of being in love, only to realize later on that their partner, who is after all only human, doesn’t fit into this fantasy. Many relationships fail for this reason, leaving Libra feeling disappointed and disillusioned.
Librans have an uncanny ability to be able to understand and sympathize with both parties during an argument. He can straddle opposites with ease. Males Librans have an instinctual insight into the female psyche and the same is true of female Librans with their male counterparts.
This ability to understand the opposite sex makes them very attractive partners. Who wouldn’t want a partner who connects with their feminine (or male) side without losing their own sexual identity?
The lesson Libra needs to learn is to bridge his ideals on how life and love should be to the level of ordinary life and how things really are. It is all about blending opposites within himself but also in the world around him.
Only when he gains and masters this knowledge (as if gaining insight by being blinded to a part of himself) will Libra truly reach his potential.
