My little sister (12 yr old) told me she wants to kiss girls and she masturbates thinking about girls. What should I do and say to her?

We live in a very conservative town and I don't want her to suffer because of this.

My answer:

You don't need to do or stay anything at this stage. Twelve is still very young and her sexual identity won't be established until she is older. Experimentation and trying to figure out is happening now.

If she is not Lesbian she will start looking at boys with different eyes in time and things will work out just fine.

There is nothing that you can do if she turns out to be Lesbian expect to support and love her for who she is. You can't change her and trying to influence her will only confuse her more.

Listen to her, be sympathetic but do not try to steer her or force her in any direction. Just be patient and supportive.

lesbian grandughter?

hello i am a nan who has a grandughter of 12 years old and also found she also was masterbateing because she liked girls. but she was 11 when she started to love girls. it came to my attention as many cut outs from mags appearred an found notes about girls she was in love with. do you know of any young girls of 11or twelve ...who have became gay since thier disclosure . i have found afew...who infact have carried on an became lesbian. but why so young do girls start to feel like this? please comment.

11-12 is the general age when puberty starts and girls become aware of themselves in a sexual way. So, it is normal for her to become aware of herself and what she likes now at this age.

If you think back on your own life - do you remember deciding that you like girls instead of boys? No? Why? Because it is something you just know, not something that you decide. Today's young persons are exposed to more things than we were - so they like to try things out, experiment a bit to see for themselves how it feels.

Give her time. If she is just trying things out - she will settle down in time. If she truly is lesbian, accept it and let her be. It is something that just is. Accept and love her for who she is - just as she is.

Respect her privacy, but make sure that she knows that she can come to you for advice and support.
