Constellation cancer – The myth

Although there are several myths and legends that relates to Cancer, I will be focusing on the myth about the Mother Goddess and how she influences the cancerian personality.

This is very interesting since the Earth Mother predates Greek mythology and takes us back to the very basics of human nature.

The Mother Goddess or Mother Earth is considered to be the oldest religion there is, since people worshiped and revered the power of the earth to give and to withhold sustenance and life as far as the records go back.

She is seen as all-powerful, vast, mysterious – the source and keeper of food, well-being and life. She is the giver or with-holder of love, security, the sense of belonging and comfort. Her love symbolizes safety, pleasure and warmth, but her displeasure can be destructive, devouring and very dark.

It is important to note that the Goddess had a consort, who was both her son and her lover, indicating that the mother, son and lover are from the same origin and part of each other. They can be understood as different energies, but coming from the same source.

Her son/lover is the creative force that brings new life, love and growth in spring, only to die in the autumn, to be mourned in the winter with cold and bleakness, but to be resurrected again in the spring to begin the cycle again.

We need to understand that the sun sign Cancer is hugely influenced by cycles. We see in the myth a continuous waxing and waning of life. The moon, the ruler of Cancer, is another example of this cyclic process.

These phases of creativity, life-force, joy and sorrow and love and abandonment will perpetually accompany a Cancer person throughout his life.

Some individuals will even be vulnerable to the changes in season and the climate around them. Their emotions can be closely connected to the cycles around them such as the season, the time of day, day of the week, the flow of a project, certain phases of relationships.

He will sometimes feels like a proverbial crab caught on the sand between the sea and dry land, waiting for the tide to come in.

The sun sign Cancer is emotionally complex and sometimes difficult to phantom. They are excellent actors and can easily move through a wide range of emotions without exposing even a hint of their true feelings. Hiding their emotions behind a hard shell. It is important for the Cancer person to be creative in some way as a form of emotional expression.

Remember that Cancer is symbolically mother, sun and lover all rolled into one - ruled by cycles and love. Complex but also a rare gem.
